Royal Caledon Air Force (RCAF)

Altitude with Attitude: A Second Life® Group of the Independent State of Caledon

Well the first thing to do is to update it with patch 4.08.

Then nip over to Hyperfighter and pick up the Hyperlobby client

It seems that Hyperlobby is a more popular hangout for squadrons than the Ubisoft forums.
I’d suggest signing up there under you SL name with RCAF tacked on the front, e.g. RCAF_Cornelius in my case. The reason I suggest RCAF in front is it means our names all get listed together in the lobby which helps to see who’s online.
I still need to look into hosting private games for us on there, so I’ll let you know when I find out more details on how to do it.

I’ve found this add on dynamic mission generator worth it’s weight in gold.

It’s fairly easy to use and gives you and infinite amount of new missions to play

This forum seems to be one of the key IL-2 forums out there so I’d put it at the top of your list if you need help with the game. It seems some people have difficulty getting it to run with Vista and other don’t. There are some tips on the forum here if you run in to trouble.

There’s quite a good general guide here, but it’s a bit out of date now

Lastly this is a link on the Ubisoft forum to big list of other IL-2 sites

It might be an idea to use this thread to add to as we learn our way around the game.

On behalf of the Wedge Tailed Eagles (an Australian IL2 group using the tag WTE ) I would like to offer a hand of friendship and welcome to the RCAF.

The Il2 community is a large and mature one and I am sure you will be pleasantly surprised with what you find there, and yes, Hyperlobby is where the majority of squads fly. You will however get a bit of a shock with the much more realistic physics (and greater difficulty) than you are used to in SL.

Please feel free to contact myself WTE_Wombat (zaphod.b@mailcity.com) or anyone you see on hyperlobby with WTE in front of their name if you need any help or would like to organise a match. We fly as a squad on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday nights at 8.30pm Sydney time (1.30am SL time).

S! (which is short hand for "I salute you").

PS - Most squads use "Teamspeak" for voice comms.

Hi again, I forgot to mention TrackIr.

I strongly recommend that you consider using TrackIr (which is an infra-red head movement tracker). Nearly all serious pilots use it and could not think of flying without it.

The way it works is simple - it tracks the position of one or more reflective dots stuck to either your headphones or the brim of a baseball cap and translates the movement of your head into changes in your view on screen. e.g. I turn my head (slightly) to the left and I am looking out over my left wing, raise my head and I am looking out through the top of the canopy etc etc. No more fiddling with hat switches to change views.

Thank you for your warm welcome Wombat! I look forward to meeting you in the air. It's been some 4 years since I last flew in IL2 and a few things have changed. Tankfully my new hardware will handle the game much better.

Ding Hao!

Just for the sake for it, I added RCAF_SinTrenton as well.
Unfortunately not sure when I will be able to get my hands on a copy, but I'll get there. :)

Nice to see the country domain of Hyperlobby too (hyperfighter.sk), since it is the one of my new homecountry. :)

Fair skies, fliers!

Here are three useful pdfs I found that add some missing detail to the rather sparse manual.
Also this site has a free download of a rather good general guide to dogfighting online in any simulation:-
